A solvable model for nuclei with pairing and aligned interactions

I present a study on the role of the aligned neutron-proton pair in nuclei with 2 protons and 2 neutrons in their valence space. Later, in $^{96}$Cd, we discuss the importance of the isovector, antiparallel ($T=1,J=0$) neutron-proton pair via a novel analytic expression for the ground state energy. Finally, we present results of numerical computations of the binding energies and excitation spectra of several nuclei whose valence space consists of nucleons in the $1g_{9/2}$ shell.
