The QCD axion is one well-motivated candidate for cold dark matter that can have very spectacular differences from other dark matter candidates. In this talk we describe our recent work on axion miniclusters and axion “stars”, small but extremely dense clumps of axions that might form a large part of the axion relic density and present some opportunities and challenges for their detection.
