A recent study at the STARPLAN centre of excellence (Schiller et al., Nature 2018) shows that rocky planets probably consist primarily of ‘chondrules’; the mm size beads present in chondritic meteorites. There is no evidence that the Solar System ever contained a significant amount of larger size solids (the proverbial cm to dm size ‘pebbles’), and a recent PhD project at STARPLAN (cf. arXiv:1801.07707) verifies that rocky planets such as Earth and Mars could have formed through accretion of chondrules, in of the order of only a million years. Evidence from cosmochemistry show that chondrules must have formed close to the accreting, early Sun. This scenario has recently received independent support from the observation and interpretation of systematic chemical abundance differences between the Sun and stars very similar to the Sun (‘solar twins’). Correlations with condensation temperatures of observed abundance differences are a natural consequence of ‘thermal processing’ in the outflows, which separates pristine dust into volatiles that escape the system, and solids depleted in volatiles that remain in the system.
