Covariant Phase Space Formalism, Boundary Symmetries, Charges and Charge Algebras
Dates: Monday November 11th and Tuesday November 12th, from 2:30-4:30PM
Abstact: Phase space formalism provides the framework to compute conserved charges (Hamiltonian generators) and sets the stage for quantization of field theories. To use this approach for generally covariant theories one should upgrade it to a covariant notion phase space. In these lectures I will review the basic setup of covariant phase space formalism starting from definition of solution space, introduction of a covariant notion of symplectic form, the notion of boundary degrees of freedom, surface charges and their algebra. We also discuss the notions of conservation and integrability of charges. We use this formalism for derivation of black hole charges and first law of black hole thermodynamics.
