Abstract: During inflation, and mostly close to the end of it, the inflaton field can transfer a fraction of its energy density to an abelian gauge field (dark photon) and generate dark electromagnetic fields. After reheating, if the dark photon is massive, the energy density of these dark electromagnetic fields eventually redshifts like non-relativistic matter. This is a viable dark matter production mechanism. If the dark sector contains dark electrons as well, they can be pair produced via the Schwinger effect close to the end of inflation. This is also a possible dark matter production scenario. In my talk I will discuss both production mechanisms.
