Observations of Type Ia supernovae led to the surprise discovery of cosmic acceleration, which was susequently explained by a dark-energy component in the standard cosmological model (Lambda CDM). The DES supernova search will approximately triple the available Type Ia datasets, and lead to improved constraints on the standard cosmology. I present a review of the current status of supernovae searches, discuss the survey strategy for DES, and give estimates for the impact of the DES survey on the Lambda CDM cosmological parameters.
