This thesis is about the application of data mining methodologies to the Gaia data for the detection of stellar structures, open clusters in particular, and their later characterisation. This devised methodology, which is adapted to a Big Data environment to analyse very large amounts of data, has resulted in the detection of about 650 new open clusters located in the whole Galactic disc, representing the major single contribution to the known open cluster population. I will also talk about the use of the whole open cluster census, updated in light of Gaia data, in a broader Galactic context. Particularly, I will focus on the structure and evolution of the Milky Way spiral arms.
