I will review recent computations of quantum effects in exceptional field theory on tori. These are shown to provide direct access to higher derivative corrections to the string theory effective action in a manifestly U-duality invariant way. The resulting objects contain sums over the quantised generalised momenta along the periodic torus and will be demonstrated to be equivalent to automorphic forms associated with exceptional Lie groups.
