In this talk, I will review recent observational results of the Milky Way from the outer disc to the solar neighbourhood before/after Gaia DR2 and present results from recent N-body simulations of the interaction of the Sagittarius-like (Sgr) dwarf with the Galaxy. These are the first ones to show quantitative agreements with the outer disc and solar neighbourhood, supporting a close link between Sagittarius' orbital mass loss history and the Galactic disc structure/kinematics during the last ~5 Gyr. I will first discuss the origins of outer disc structures with respect to the orbital mass-loss history of Sgr, the dark matter halo wake response as well as Sgr's tides. I will particularly focus on the origin of thin stream-like structures seen in the Anticenter. I will show that these are remnants of tidal tails excited during earlier Sgr pericentric passages and show how these structures could be used to probe the chemistry of the disc as well as constrain the Galactic potential in the midplane at large distances. In the second part of the talk, I will show that these models in light of Gaia DR2 are qualitatively, and to a large degree quantitatively able to reproduce many of the recently uncovered features in the 6D Gaia samples presented in Katz et al. and Antoja et al. I will examine the origins of these various structures in the context of Sgr impact model and how these relate to the very last pericentric passage and most likely no other known or putative satellites by process of elimination based on dynamical arguments. I will conclude with some outlooks into the future.​
