Heavy quarkonium states are mesons containing a heavy quark and a heavy antiquark, charm or bottom. They have played a major role in our current understanding of the Standard Model, and, in particular, of QCD, the sector describing the strong interactions. I will outline the developement of the field since its origins, and focus on a few selected topics of current interest.
