Higher-derivative terms are usually connected with the appearance of instabilities and ghost states. I will present class of theories (supersymmetric or not) which are free of such problems. In particular, I will discuss consistent higher-derivative terms in N=1 supergravity, how they may modify the structure of the scalar potential and their possible role in cosmology.
