The asymptotic structure of theories of gravity is of paramount significance in properly addressing a wide range of problems, from cosmology to holography. I will discuss a systematic approach to understand this asymptotic structure in terms of a suitable symplectic space, which is applicable in principle to any theory of (quantum) gravity and any background. Applications to holography in non-asymptotically AdS backgrounds will then be discussed.
