There are a number of different proposals for infinite-dimensional global symmetries underlying maximal supergravity and how they could pave the way to a better understanding of M-theory or quantum gravity. I will review a recent analysis of a particular proposal by West that involves the Kac--Moody algebra E11 and in particular how this combines with gauge symmetries. This talk is based on 1703.01305 with Bossard, Palmkvist, Pope and Sezgin and can be seen as a prelude to an extension that will be discussed by Jakob Palmkvist in his upcoming talk.
