The power spectrum of primordial fluctuations in the matter distribution in the universe contains oscillations that originated from acoustic waves which were frozen at the epoch of baryon-photon decoupling and grew by gravitational instability. The known physical scale of these oscillations provides a standard ruler for measuring cosmic distances to high precision, probing the expansion history of the universe and the curvature of space. Techniques for measuring baryon acoustic oscillations will be reviewed, focusing in particular on the use of the Lyman Alpha Forest for measuring the power spectrum of intergalactic matter. Other applications of the Lyman Alpha Forest for understanding the physics and time evolution of quasars will also be discussed.
