The first detections of gravitational waves from merging black holes opened a new era in astronomy and cosmology, providing a new tool to explore the cosmos. After the first runs of LIGO, a significant fraction of detected events showed that progenitors in black hole binary systems has an unexpected large mass. This fact triggered a large discussion about the possible origin of black holes so massive, in particular it was suggested that their origin could be primordial and that they could constitute a significant fraction of the dark matter. Therefore it is of primary importance to be able to test both hypothesis. After briefly reviewing the current status of primordial black holes, I will propose a possible way to discriminate between these two different scenarios. Combining future large scale structure surveys and proposed gravitational waves observatories, I will show how clustering properties of black holes can be used to understand when they formed. This new tool can be used to rule out one of the major dark candidate we have nowadays.
