Astrophysical jets are a ubiquitous and powerful phenomenon in astronomy. Their emission ranges over a wide scale, from young stellar objects (YSO) to super-massive black holes (SMBH) and Active Galactic Nucleii (AGN). Jets are believed to play a central role in regulating protostellar and black hole mass-accretion as well as galaxy growth via AGN feedback; despite their importance, their driving mechanism is still largely unknown. This is chiefly due to observational limitations: their launching and collimation occurs in the innermost regions of the driving engine, requiring extremely high-angular resolution observations to test theoretical predictions. In this context, radio-interferometry at the shortest radio wavelengths (<1 mm) is the only technique that can reach the required resolution. ALMA with its longest baseline configurations is now able to resolve the structure of planet-forming disks in solar-like stars and more complex accretion/outflow structures in their higher mass siblings. What is more, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) with ALMA is also paving the way to groundbreaking science, chiefly as part of the Event Horizon telescope (EHT), which has made a historic breakthrough publishing on Apr 2019 the first image of a black hole.

In my talk, I will review recent results obtained with ALMA, the EHT and other powerful VLBI networks across the globe. These results provide a major leap forward in our understanding of the mass-accretion/mass-loss processes in Galactic high-mass star formation, the role of magnetic fields in launching relativistic jets, and black hole physics in general. I will also touch upon future prospects based on ongoing developments and expansion of current capabilities, which will open up new exciting possibilities in the field of jet astrophysics in the current decade.
