I will review what we currently know from lattice QCD simulations about the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter, including a connection to the chemical freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions. I will then expand the calculations to larger baryonic densities, using string theory methods which match the available QCD results. I will discuss the possible existence of a critical point and its relevance for the next generation colliders.
