I will discuss the Schwinger process in 1+1 dimensional de Sitter space, and will derive a formula for the conductivity of vacuum. This setup is also a toy model for describing vacuum decay beyond the semiclassical approximation, which clarifies the possibility of ``upward tunneling" during inflation.
