Supernova 1987A is unique because it is the closest supernova in over 400 years and, consequently, it is the best-studied supernova of the modern era. We can study in SN1987A --in real time and with high spatial resolution-- physical processes that we can only infer for other supernovae. For example, HST observations over 20 years have shown the detailed evolution of the emission from both, the inner ejecta and the equatorial ring. The SED of SN1987A is now well determined, particularly after ALMA has started operation.

ALMA observations in 4 spectral bands starting with cycle 0 have resolved each of the components of the supernova and have shown, much to everybody’s surprise, that this supernova is a powerful dust and CO factory. The latter has led to plan observations that hold the promise of determining the shape of the explosion via spectral-line tomography. This is an exciting prospect. During the talk, I will present the highlights of our ongoing research on this outstanding target.
