We will review aspects of the recent construction of black holes carrying higher spin charge in three dimensions. We show that the construction admits multiple branches of solutions which potentially compete in the thermal ensemble. The thermodynamic interpretation of higher spin black holes and their multiple branches poses various puzzles, some of which we attempt to address.
