Black holes of all scales become activated when gravitationally capturing material during the accretion process, but the exact form of that activity seems to depend strongly on the rate of accretion. Accreting black holes, whether stellar in X-ray binaries (BHBs) or supermassive in active galactic nuclei (AGN), spend most of their time in low accretion rate states, which contrary to what one might think are actually responsible for many very high-energy phenomena. For instance, the low accretion rate state is associated with the launching of jets that can accelerate particles to high energy, and it is these weaker jets (FRI/BL Lac types) from nearby systems that are considered good candidates for ultrahigh energy cosmic ray production. Similarly, for roughly the last 10 Gyrs and in our nearby Universe, most active galaxies are in lower accretion states, and the predominant form of AGN feedback they provide is via their jets (“radio” or “maintenance” mode). Many questions remain about how exactly this feedback works, but it is clear that without it there would be too many massive galaxies compared to what we see today. I will discuss how studies of several nearby LLAGN, particularly our Galactic center supermassive black hole Sgr A*, together with BHBs, are helping us make progress on important questions such as how jets are launched and accelerate particles, as well as what governs the output properties relevant for feedback.
