Press release (Catalan)

The Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Catalan Government has published the map of the night sky quality of Catalonia. The map merges for the first time the results from different campaigns carried out between 2012 and 2015 and locates the focuses of light pollution, as well as the most suitable areas to preserve night sky darkness. The study shows that the sky of the Montsec Range, recognized as a Starlight Destination by the UNESCO in 2016, is still of exceptional quality. The Parc Nacional d’ Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici and the natural parcs Ports and Cadí-Moixeró also stand out for their quality, whereas the quality of Western natural parks such as Cap de Creus, Montgrí-Illes Medes and Baix Ter depend on their proximity to urban areas.

The measurements have been coordinated by technicians of the Direcció General de Qualitat Ambiental i Canvi Climàtic of the Catalan Government, in collaboration with the Montsec Astronomical Park and the Regional Council of La Noguera, and with the participation of members of the IEEC University of Barcelona (Dept. FQA & ICCUB).
