The Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) is announcing its adherence to the manifest issued by the "Ciències en Perill" platform, which advocates for the commitment to maintain high standards in scientific education in public schools.
The "Ciències en Perill" platform has raised significant concerns regarding the recent changes proposed by the catalan Department of Education and Professional Training, which affect the science subjects in the first year of the baccalaureate. The platform's manifest highlights the potential risks these changes pose to the quality and depth of scientific education.
The proposed changes include a reduction in the teaching hours for key science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geology. This reduction could lead to a fragmented understanding of scientific concepts among students. They may also result in a shift of essential scientific content to optional subjects, creating disparities in the scientific knowledge acquired by students across different schools. Lastly, maintaining a stable curriculum is key to ensuring that students receive a comprehensive and coherent education in the sciences.
The ICCUB aligns with the platform's call to withdraw the proposed modifications and advocates for a curriculum that ensures a solid foundation in scientific knowledge. The institute believes that a robust science education is crucial for developing informed and critical-thinking individuals, especially in an era where misinformation and pseudoscientific theories are becoming prevalent.
By joining the "Ciències en Perill" platform, we want to promote high-quality scientific education and support initiatives that safeguard the integrity of science teaching.
