On Friday 26 May Kip Thorne, one of the world's leading expert in theoretical, gravitational and astro- physics, gave a talk describing the state of research on gravitational waves at La Pedrera (Barcelona). The event was organized in the context of the ICFO Chair Ignacio Cirac - Fundació Catalunya la Pedrera, in collaboration with the ICCUB, the IFAE, the ICE and the IEEC. The talk focused on the origin and recent discoveries of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory), and on the near future of gravitational waves astronomy.
Thorne is currently a Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physical, Emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He was one of the promoters of LIGO, the observatories that made the first detection ever of gravitational waves in 2016. This discovery makes him a firm candidate for the next Nobel Prize in Physics.
During his visit to Barcelona Thorne was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
